“When people decide they want to be free… there is nothing that can stop them.” - Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Join Human Rights Connected as we celebrate Blog Action Day 2013 for human rights! We are a nonprofit organization working to increase understanding of human rights law and strategic nonviolent action to strengthen civil society involvement in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
History is witness to numerous accounts of citizens organizing to rise against oppression and demand respect for their rights. Citizens utilizing strategic nonviolent action wield the kind of power that refuses to abate against threats to human dignity, prevailing against tyrants and power structures antithetical to the value of human life.
The proliferation of digital technologies allows people to connect and organize on an international level in unprecedented ways. Social media can never replace the value of person-to-person contact in creating the kind of bonds and skills necessary for people to willingly risk their lives for a cause. But the rapid trend in widespread and instantaneous availability of information provides a truly revolutionary opportunity to enhance our understanding of and potential for civic action on a global scale. We want to assist in this process of creating a global knowledge-sharing network because we believe in the essential work of these activists to bring about fundamental and sustainable change.
Anyone with internet access has a voice to communicate ideas, rally and participate in transforming his or her community. Bloggers around the world have proven extremely successful in bringing international attention to human rights issues in their countries, defying censorship frequently in the face of harsh repression – and too often paying a heavy price for their engagement.
